Australian iphone apps

August 19, 2008

Thought I’d share a couple of neat, useful apps with an aussie flavour:

IceTV - available on the iTunes appstore, but I don’t watch much tv so really this isn’t a heap of use to me

Www.itransit.com.au - cool web app that provides public transport info

Www.ANZ.com - ANZ Internet banking is now possible on the Jesus phone and it’s cooler than ever!

Any more I’ve missed? Lemme know in the comments!

I’m still alive!

July 15, 2008

I haven’t updated my blog in over a month, my bad!  Since then there have been at least 4 immediate birthdays, the iPhone 3G has been released, I’ve started getting hooked into GTA4 on the PS3, work work and more work!

I’ve been doing some internal spiritual reflection lately that I want to share on here when I have some time to type out my thoughts.  My gut feelings about the world we live in, while skewed now and then, have lately been that there is massive change in the way we live, work and play coming. To some it may be positive, to others it will crush them with negativity and cause many people to become broken. If you begin to think I’m a crack smoking hippie talking who’s going to start quoting Nostradamus scripture, dont worry, I’m not, just bear with me. =)

Envirobox

June 9, 2008

I’ve just “re-launched” my other site, Envirobox. It’s over at www.envirovox.net!  Go check it out.

Ooh and I also added a iPhone plugin that is supposed to render this and Envirobox in an iPhone compatible format. It’s still in beta so “render” isn’t exactly the word I’ld use at the moment!

Also if my blog is becoming a huge mess of Web 2.0 absurdity here’s a quick overview:

  • This page, Home, shows all my blog postings. Down the right you can see my status on MSN and AIM (Actually, this is on WebEx Connect, go check it out if you haven’t already), a list of tags of my recent blog postings, my pages on a bunch of sites that I sometimes go to (dang only having 24 hours in the day!), comments, my photo albums on Facebook, ra ra ra.
  • About is about me funnily enough. I don’t actually use this page to describe myself at all, it usually has a silly pic or random comment instead :)
  • Lifestream. This is interesting. This is like an ongoing log of my life on the web. For example, if I twitter something, or perhaps I’m reading a Lifehacker article via Google Reader on my iPhone on the train on the way home from work, or we’re listening to something on the Mac in the living room and Last.fm picks it up, it’ll end up on this list. Mayhem. This is actually a really cool service by Profilactic - thanks you guys if you ever read this!
  • Photos are the albums I share on Facebook… Nuff’ said!

Have fun kiddies (whoever you are!)

Holiday snaps

June 2, 2008

Oh - me and Laura went to NZ with Jem!  We started in Auckland, I showed Laura where I grew up, then we went across to spend a night in Coromandel and down to Wellington via a bunch of cool places.  Now all we have to do is go somewhere I havent been before…eg Thailand <drool>!!

One thing I tried to do was “get the most” out of my relatively crappy Canon A530… Have a look at the Photos tab above, I am uploading a bunch of them to Te Facebook albums as I speak (all starting with NZ2008) There are many that were taken with Laura’s low-end Nikon point and shoot, and Jem’s Samsung P&S too.  There were also several others that were way too grainy because I thought I was the f’ing man by putting the ISO levels way up to compensate for lack of light and more that were taken with slow shutter speeds and no tripod…which I’m not gonna upload. :)

Obligatory tasters:

Feeling cold!

Well it’s that time of year again - we all make that migratory journey to Bunnings to stock up on various things - heaters, those absurd gas heaters for outdoors areas that greek people seem to love, and anything else for that matter that keeps you warm.

Last year I was determined to install some insulation in my roof but never got around to it. See my house is only 5 years old but for some reason the wog-guy-next-door-that-built-all-6-of-these-units-and-seems-very-dodgy completely skipped installing any form of goddamn insulation in the walls or ceilings of these damn places.

Isn’t that illegal? Yeah I thought so too.

Anyway, it seemed like a job to get my father in law to be (hopefully? hmm!) to help me out with so we did the Bunnings thing and came back with 5 bales of R3.5 insulation batt things to stick in the roof upstairs, since it always seems to be cold up there.

Those things seriously irritate my skin!  I was wearing a dust mask, glasses, a jumper and jeans and gloves and sweet Jesus and mother mary I was itching like a bad case of the crabs.  The bad news is that we only got about 1/2 of it done - because of the ducts that the energy-sucking central heating / evap cooling in the roof getting in the way.  So next weekend is “finish off weekend” where we get to contort our bodies into small spaces they aren’t supposed to go to get our friendly-looking but dermatitically challenging wads of fluff into every nook and cranny!

Next post, I’m going to bitch about why I dislike my neighbor.  Hope he doesnt read my blog!

Steve Jobs really is 3 steps ahead

May 5, 2008

Something interesting that hit the blogosphere yesterday was this story about Apple knitting together a coalition of companies to form a future mobile computing platform with touch sensitive interfaces and built-in motion sensors.

The story goes on to say that “Cisco is experimenting with software that will allow users to “flick” documents from their iPhones to their desktop computers” and claims they are “developing software that creates a real-time link between the iPhone and your computer. The result: A user could simply aim his iPhone at his computer and “sweep” the file to it with a finger flick, sending the file to the desktop over the phone’s built in wi-fi connection.”

I’m not going to go dribbling tidbits or speculating on some unannounced product (the last thing we need is another iRumour, besides I’m bound by a contract that probably prohibits me from doing that - either way IANA lawyer).. but!!! I remembered reading last year after Apple and Cisco settled their trademark case soon after the iPhone announcement early 2007, the two companies would “explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security and consumer and enterprise communications”

Remember, this is 6 weeks after the first announcement of iPhone at Macworld 2007!  And people are only just saying now that Jobs and his team are 3 steps ahead of everybody else, because they’re hearing 3G iPhone rumors, and seeing enterprise communications products like the VPN client from Cisco end up in the iPhone 2.0 firmware.

It makes you wonder just how far back the iPhone was planned - probably after the iPod became ridiculously popular - and just how far entrenched Apple planned it from day, like a well-executed game of Chess - to be in the lives of us everyday citizens!
